New Business Model: Co-operatives

The Mayor's Office of Economic Development, in partnership with Local Enterprise Assistance Fund (LEAF) & Center for Co-operative Development and Solidarity (CCDS), will host an informative workshop regarding the "how-tos" of forming a co-op along with an outline of the benefits co-ops can provide.

As entrepreneurs, we know you are constantly looking for ways to lower your costs, get better prices for your product or service, secure investment for growth, retain great workers and encourage them to feel the sort of responsibility for your reputation that you do as a business owner. This workshop will highlight ways that entrepreneurs like you have used the cooperative model to build better businesses. You will learn from successful co-op members about the different types of cooperative businesses that exist in the US, and about the process for converting your business into a co-op.

Lean Business Planning

The Mayor's Office of Economic Development, in partnership with the Boston Chapter of SCORE, will host a Lean Business planning workshop.

Is the prospect of developing a business plan daunting? Have you procrastinated, even though everyone tells you that you need one? In this workshop you will learn a lean approach to business plans called the Business Model Canvas. See how, in a couple of hours, you can make tremendous progress toward getting the nuts and bolts of your business plan down on paper, so that you can move on to the critical activities of testing your assumptions and refining your business ideas. This workshop will be presented by Laura Colcord, Co-Chair of the Boston Chapter of SCORE.

Big Legal Questions and Commercial Leasing:

The Mayor's Office of Economic Development, in partnership with Women Entrepreneurs BostonDaily General Counsel, PLLC and Community Business Clinic of Northeastern University's School of Law, will host a two-session workshop addressing commercial leasing and business entity formation.

The Entity Formation session will help attendees decipher the best legal form for their business, taking into consideration aspects of liability, taxation, control, administrative issues, and long-term expectations.

In the Commercial Leasing session attendees will learn practical information on basic commercial leases, rights of tenants, responsibilities of landlords, and lease negotiating tips. This workshop will address concerns of both current and future commercial lease holders.

By providing direct business assistance and connecting businesses to Business Support Organizations, we build the capacity of business owners and entrepreneurs to successfully start, run, and grow their businesses in Boston. At the end of this session, attendees will learn about credit, receive a credit report, and have a plan on how to build their credit.
